What is Cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy came into the limelight recently after American swimmer Michael Phelps was photographed with circular purple bruises on his back and shoulders at the Rio Olympic Games, but the concept is not new. Although there are conflicting opinions regarding the pioneers of this practice, the earliest pictographic record suggests that it was the ancient Egyptians who invented it around 1500 BC.

Cupping therapy involves placing cups on the skin and creating a vacuum to promote healing and improve circulation. Some of the potential benefits of cupping therapy may include:

•Pain relief: Cupping therapy has been shown to be effective in relieving various types of pain, including back pain, neck pain and headaches. It works by increasing blood flow to the affected area, which can reduce inflammation and promote healing.

•Reduced muscle tension: Cupping therapy can help release tension in the muscles and fascia, which can be particularly helpful for people who have chronic muscle pain or stiffness.

•Improved circulation: Cupping therapy can help improve circulation by increasing blood flow to the area being treated. This can help deliver oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, promote healing and remove metabolic waste products.

•Immune system support: Cupping therapy has been shown to affect the immune system by increasing levels of certain immune cells and reducing inflammation. This can help the body fight off infections and illnesses.

•Reduced stress and anxiety: Cupping therapy can promote relaxation and reduce stress, which can have a positive impact on overall health and wellbeing.

•Improved skin health: Cupping therapy can help promote healthy skin by increasing blood flow and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. This can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and improve the overall texture and tone of the skin.

•Detoxification: Cupping therapy can help stimulate the lymphatic system which is responsible for removing waste and toxins from the body. This can help boost overall health and reduce the risk of certain illnesses.

Additionally, cupping therapy may leave temporary marks or bruises on the skin which can be a normal side effect of the treatment. These marks usually disappear within a few days to a week and are not usually painful.
